Reading : Game Fun

This weeks readings were fun, they try and explain "what is fun " and more importantly can you design for fun or this it just naturally happen when creating a game with good design .

The first reading, an article on Gamification Design ( click here to join ), Oxford define fun as enjoyment or amusement but in terms of games and gamification it says in the article that its more defined as "pleasurable engagement" , but what qualifies as this term . It lays a simple example of 4 fun game mechanics  being ,

  1. Easy Fun (Novelty): Curiosity from exploration, role play, and creativity
  2. Hard Fun (Challenge): Fiero, the epic win, from achieving a difficult goal
  3. People Fun (Friendship): Amusement from competition and cooperation
  4. Serious Fun (Meaning): Excitement from changing the player and their world

when reading through these i personally can think of game examples I have played myself , and which i though where fun so there must be some truth to what they are saying.

The second article paper ( click here to view ) is another academic paper, yet again i find it harder to understand and stay focused , and defiantly isn't a "fun" read, but from what i gathered through the results of the tests they did was that playing games with others rather then alone enhanced the overall enjoyment of the game. There is also a part which relates back to the "hard fun" in the previous article , where the results that  “The thrill of competing with others especially when you know they are above your skill level, every successful hit feels like a victory."(Male, FG 1 )

When you think about it , it makes sense, Games where you actually need to pay attention and focus in order to win or even just compete will be more enjoyable and mentally simulating.
Finally we have the video, which was again a fun , simplified version of what I read. Overall a great watch as it was very interesting seeing the examples given and seeing visual examples and diagrams throughout the video was also very helpful for my understanding of Game Fun . This week was probably my favorite week for reading as I was actually interested in learning what is Game Fun.

  1. Hey Craig. Happy to hear you had a good time with reading this week. I found the reading task from this week much more interesting too. You did a great job summarising the mechanics and experiments covered in the articles. Good luck with the rest of the semester bro ✌🏻. We’re almost finished this semester and will finally be able to chill out.

  2. Hi Craig, It's great to see you had fun with this reading task because I felt the same way I enjoy reading tasks because I end up learning a lot from them and they end up being very worthwhile, especially if you're interested in the topic discussed and game design in general. Nice blog post overall it was a great read man.
