Game Vision Statement

Introduction

My game Idea is a racing game , potentially called "Speed Racer". It will be made up of a fast paced racing game , with a fun creative track which will consist of some challenging obstacles and coin trails, the player will b trying to get around the track as fast as possible.

Genre

The game genre I have chosen is a 3-D racing game, haven a high paced feel to it. Focusing heavily on the in game mechanics. Similar to the likes of Need for Speed, Mario Kart and many more arcade style racing games. Art of Rally is a perfect example of the genre the game will be similar to.

Gameplay Overview

The gameplay will consist of quite a lot of mechanics , I plan on making a  difficult track which involves jumps, loops and some other interesting track features such as given the player a choice on going the left or right path or the upper and lower paths. Since its a high paced game the dynamic of given the player a choice while driving will make then concentrate and pay more attention to the game which is crucial for gameplay. Also in my game I plan on having some power ups , such as boost section on certain parts of the track. The gameplay camera will be following the player from behind similar to many other racing games , this creates a much better view for the player and makes the gameplay more enjoyable. There will be plenty of sound effects also added , such as music, car engine sounds, exhaust sounds , power up sounds , and crash sounds. In my game I plan on giving the players of options , if they are new to the game and usually struggle with racing games, there will  be the option of having a barrier on the sides of the track so they cant veer of course , similar to what you see in some Mario Kart maps.

Now more in detail..

  • The Racing Track
The track will be made as a fun, stylized track made mostly in blender. It will be an arcade style track with many tight turns and have a environment in it as well. In my track there will be jumps so the player can have more fun and get big air time , there can be loops which would be a more challenging aspects for users , some downhill speed sections , corners that the player can drift around and a choice on which path direction they take , will it be a shortcut or a longer way, this adds more dynamic for the player rather then just following a boring straight track

  • Racing Mechanics
The actual racing mechanics will consist of your typical racing game mechanics such as acceleration, deceleration , left or right , brake, drifting , and crashing. The game will also incorporate some mechanics, taking inspiration from Trials Fusion , of being able to tilt back and forward when in the air jumps. The game will incorporate some booster sections on the track which is another fun little racing game mechanic which will make the game more enjoyable. Like other racing games mine will have a coin collecting system , this gives the game a little bonus objective and also having a checkpoint system allows players a easy to play more enjoyable game.

  • Sound Effects
Like all racing games , sound effects are very important , as a player is driving they need to hear the engine , the tires on the road , the exhaust, the envoirmensts they are in eg, wind , rain , the trees, the river and so on . This creates a more immersive playing experience for the user. Also music is quite important as it will keep the player focused on the game and not get bored, I haven't decided on the music choice yet , that will be the final thing I do as the music needs to match the game aesthetic and pace.

  • Camera
The camera will be a follow the player camera type, i have yet to decide whether it will follow the player from behind or from the the top. Each gives it a different perspective , many big rated racing games go with the follow from behind option such as Need for Speed or Forza Horizon so its something i defiantly know works well in a racing game. The from the top perspective is in more arcade style game such as art of rally and Mini Racing Word which was made in Unity3D  https://kitty-in-a-box.itch.io/mini-racing-world

  • Aesthetics
3D low poly game , with colorful and stylized environments. Taking inspiration from the likes of Art Of Rally, Mini Word Racing and Need for Speed the game will be a aesthetically pleasing game , which creates a enjoyable playing environment for the player ,  The game will be a custom made map which resembles a world , having trees , roads , hills , sunlight and so on . I think getting lighting will be the must crucial thing in terms of aesthetics , so the game will be constantly changing to simulate a real world.

Resources Required

I will require a lot or resources , I will need to use blender to create the model of the cars so i may also need to download external files for car parts which I believe you can find online. Also in terms of creating the actual track itself , I've seen many tutorials which use files from websites which all the elements you use to create your own world however since I plan on making a low-poly game it might be easier to make everything in blender along with the car. Audio files will also be needed i can find them on copyright free websites such as epidemic sound and many others so it shouldn't be a problem.

  1. Hi Craig
I really like your racing game idea. The setting that you have for it I really like as well the woodland style I think would suit the game quite well. I also like the mechanics that you are thinking of putting in like the option to move while in the air and the choice the player has instead of following one set path. The use of blender is a good idea also instead of trying to find models that would suit for ages make them yourself. Do you have much experience in blender might have to ask you to make a couple of things for me hahaha. Also Mario kart on Wii best Mario kart no discussion.
